The event “The right to leave and the right to stay: community decisions in a changing climate” which took place on October 9 in Vienna has been organized by VIDC (Vienna Institute for International Dialogue and Cooperation) in cooperation with the HABITABLE project, with the aim of discussing how European people can actively and effectively support people living in highly climate-vulnerable regions in the Global South.
The event highlighted that climate change can lead to migration and displacement, but also to immobility, thus implying that people’s needs faced with climate change are diverse, and not homogenous. Accordingly, the response to a changing climate must also be context-sensitive to accomodate those multifaceted needs.
The event featured the presence of Mana Omar – climate researcher, executive director of Spring of the ASAL, member of YOUNGO and activist with Fridays for Future Africa, and Diogo Andreola Serraglio – climate scientist and research associate at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research as part of the HABITABLE project.
HABITABLE aims to significantly advance our understanding of the current interlinkages between climate impacts and migration and displacement patterns, in order to better anticipate their future evolutions.
