About

It is often assumed that migration induced by climate change will be determined by the nature and extent of climate impacts. Yet research shows that migration decisions are also shaped by how local populations perceive climatic changes and habitability at home and at potential destinations. This side-event showed the implications for adaptation by bringing together initial insights from the HABITABLE project (funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme) with insights from IOM, IDMC and pioneers on the ground.

Program

  • 10:15
Beyond models: human mobility and the social impacts of climate change
  • Francois Gemenne (Hugo Observatory): Habitability as a central issue: the HABITABLE project.
  • Harald Sterly (University of Vienna): Towards more equitable adaptation: an intersectional approach to climate impacts, habitability, and migration.
  • Mechthild Becker (PIK): Connecting climate capacities with country realities: Insights from B-EPICC and HABITABLE
  • Dennis Tänzler (adelphi): Migration scenarios informed by empirical realities and good practices

(all four inputs are related to initial insights of the HABITABLE project)

  • Alice Baillat (IDMC): Disaster displacement: Informing action on internal displacement with data, research and evidence
  • Manuel Marques Pereira (IOM): How risk information and perceptions influence mobility as adaptation or L&D
  • Careen Joel Mwakitalu (UNMGCY/ No Taka Tanzania) (remote): How the Geospatial Data 4 Climate Mobility project can inform policy and create solutions for affected populations

Beyond models : how social impacts of climate change are shaped by perceptions

HABITABLE aims to significantly advance our understanding of the current interlinkages between climate impacts and migration and displacement patterns, in order to better anticipate their future evolutions.
